Merge Mutants is a 2D top-down game prototype built in Unity 6, combining bullet-hell combat with survivor-like mechanics in a round-based structure. The project takes inspiration from games such as Brotato, Enter the Gungeon, and The Binding of Isaac, with a focus on fast-paced combat and short, repeatable gameplay loops. The player controls a mutant that wants to break out of a laboratory and must fight through waves of enemies to achieve this goal. During each round the player can collect biomass, which is then used to acquire new mutants that they can merge with, resulting in bigger mutants with new abilities.
The prototype was developed in a small team of three, with me serving as programmer and contributing to the design and implementation of core gameplay systems. My work on the prototype focused primarily on character movement, the merge mechanic, UI and the audio implementation, including integrating these systems into the overall gameplay loop and iterating on them as the prototype progressed. Outside of these gameplay systems, it was also my responsibility to ensure the game ran smoothly, even with a large number of enemies on the screen, and to implement the necessary systems to support this, such as object pooling for enemies, projectiles and dropped resources.
